How to use the How Much to Sell For Calculator

  1. Pick the platform you plan to list on.
  2. Enter the profit you want to make, what the item cost you and what the shipping label costs.
  3. Choose whether the buyer pays shipping or you offer free shipping.
  4. Read the lowest list price that still makes that profit, with the fee breakdown, and compare it with every other platform in the table.

The price that pays you, not the platform

Most resellers price backwards from the market: find what similar items sold for, list a little higher, hope the fees leave something. This calculator works forwards from what you need. Tell it the profit you want and what the item and its shipping cost you, and it finds the lowest price at which the platform’s fees still leave you that profit, checked to the cent.

The platform matters. To make $20.00 on an item that cost $10.00, with the buyer paying $8.00 shipping, the lowest workable price ranges from $31.84 on Depop to $41.24 on StockX, a gap of $9.40 for exactly the same profit. If buyers will pay the same on both, list where the required price is lowest; if they won’t, the table shows how much room each platform leaves you.

Why fees make pricing tricky

A fee that is a percentage of the price grows when you raise the price to cover it, so adding the rate to your target never quite works. Most platforms also add something that is not a percentage of the item price: a fixed amount per order, a percentage of the shipping and sales tax the buyer pays, or a flat fee on cheap items. Those pieces weigh most on low-priced items, which is why a $10.00 profit target can need a much higher price than you expect on one platform and barely move on another.

Using the answer

  • It is a floor, not a listing price. If you take offers or run sales, list high enough that your usual discount still lands on or above it.
  • Break-even is useful too. Enter a profit of 0 to see the lowest price at which a sale stops losing money, handy for clearing old stock.
  • Settings change the answer. Categories, seller levels and optional extras change the fees; open a platform’s calculator from the table to set them and use its “What should I list it at?” box.

Frequently asked questions

How do you work out how much to sell something for?

Add up what you need to cover (item cost, any shipping you pay and the profit you want), then find the price at which the platform’s fees leave exactly that much. Because fees are partly a percentage of the price, you can’t just add them on: raising the price raises the fee. This calculator searches every price to the cent and returns the lowest one that works.

Why not just add the fee percentage to my price?

Adding 13% to a price does not cover a 13% fee, because the fee is charged on the new, higher price too. Dividing by one minus the rate gets closer, but fixed per-order fees, fees on shipping and flat fees below a threshold still break the shortcut. The calculator applies each platform’s full schedule instead.

Can a lower price ever make more profit?

Yes, where a platform switches from a flat fee to a percentage at a price threshold. Just above the threshold you can keep less than just below it, so the calculator checks every cent and gives the lowest price that reaches your profit, even if a slightly higher one would not.

Should I list at exactly this price?

Treat it as your floor. If you accept offers, list higher so a typical discount still lands on or above it, and check sold listings for what similar items actually go for.

Which settings does each platform use?

Each platform’s standard settings: default category, standard seller level and no optional extras. Open a platform’s own calculator from the table to set its category or seller level; it has the same “What should I list it at?” box.
